Every Dinner

By January 21, 2025No Comments

This happens every dinner. I get given a lot of food and my parents expect me to eat it all but I can’t. I tell them that I’m full, but they literally tell me that I’m not. I understand that I’m 18 now but literally what am I supposed to do?  Just so you know, talking to them doesn’t turn out good.

Help Yourself:

  • Hello writer, thank you for reaching out to Teen Central and sharing your story. It sounds like this is something you’ve been struggling with for awhile now.
  • You stated that talking to them doesn’t turn out good.  Have you tried communicating with them in other ways? Maybe writing them a letter can help you organize your thoughts and can help them understand your perspective without the overwhelming back and forth emotions involved.
  • Have you talked to another trusted adult? Maybe they can help talk to your parents with you and together you can come to an understanding or a compromise. It can also help lighten the load of keeping your frustrations bottled up inside.
  • Here on Teen Central under the Tools tab we have a section on “Family” where it addresses different topics and issues one may face with family dynamics. Check it out.

Consider This:

There are many things that can help us cope when we feel big emotions. Consider the following that may help:

  • Journaling – writing your thoughts and feelings can be a way to express yourself. Sometimes we can find the right words because writing them down can be less intimidating.
  • Meditation – have you considered some grounding exercises such as breathing exercises, mindful walks, or stretching. They can help redirect the mind to something more calming.  This may be helpful before you attempt to have a conversation with your parents.
  • Have you offered to go with your parents to talk to a professional about proper eating habits?  Maybe go see a dietician together?  They may be unwilling to hear your thoughts on it, but a discussion with a professional may help.
  • It great that you’re trying to find a way to work this out with your parents.  You should be proud that you’re trying so hard to maintain your relationship.
