FIRST THINGS FIRST
- Thank you for having the courage to tell your story. TeenCentral is always here to listen. It must be so very difficult to watch your pet be hurt by your parent while you don’t know how to handle it.
- I just want to ask if you have shared your concern with any other trusted adult in your life – such as a grandparent, stepparent, aunt/uncle or other older cousin or family member. Sometimes it can be helpful to talk face-to-face with someone about feelings you are having. It would also be nice to have an adult to support you during this time to keep you and your dog safe.
- We want to help Loki too! Animal cruelty is a felony, so we want to lead you to the proper information you need to get your dog help.
- In New York City an individual can call 311 to report animal abuse. In most states, you can report animal cruelty to the police, animal control, Humane Society or the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).
- If this whole situation is causing you so much stress that YOU need your OWN support, please reach out to Crisis Textline Available 24/7 Support to all individuals in crisis Text “HOME” to 741741 www.crisistextline.org.
- Because you mentioned that you were also hit in the process of these conflicts with your dad and the dog, we HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you see your guidance counselor as soon as possible. If you aren’t able to access that kind of support, then please read this blog on helping yourself with abuse: CLICK HERE
Remember – you do have the right to call 911 if you are scared for your life.
WHEN YOU NEED MORE HELP
- Learn about emotions! It really seems like you’re very very worried and anxious about your dog Loki, and his safety. If you are able to help him by following the instructions above, that will surely help you feel better. - Reframe your perspective! Spend as much time as you can with Loki! Can you take him outside? It’s always helpful for both of you to get outside in the fresh air. When Loki is with you he will feel safe. Show him that you care and that he is safe with you.
- Remind yourself that you are not alone! Go to TeenCentral and use the search tool, you can see many other stories of individuals who wrote in seeking help for their beloved pets.
